Students across Auckland are celebrating a major cost- of-living victory after Auckland Transport (AT) announced that its student public transport discount has doubled from 20 percent to 40 percent.

The move follows sustained advocacy from students and a successful fair fares petition, which drew widespread support across campus and online. The Auckland University Students’ Association (AUSA), alongside Auckland University of Technology Student Association (AUTSA), and other student groups, played a key role in pushing for the change, amplifying student voices and taking their concerns directly to decision-makers.

For many students, transport costs are a significant financial pressure, especially as living expenses continue to rise. The increase to a 40 percent discount is expected to make a meaningful difference to weekly budgets for thousands of students who rely on buses, trains, and ferries to get to campus, work, and placements.

AUSA President said the result shows what is possible when students act collectively. “This win is proof that student advocacy works. When we stand together and speak up about the issues that affect us, real change can happen. We are proud to have worked alongside students and partner organisations to secure a fairer outcome.”

Students were instrumental in driving the campaign, with many signing the petition, sharing it online, and engaging in conversations about the rising cost of transport. The strong response demonstrated just how deeply the issue resonated across the student community.

The new 40 percent discount is set to ease some of the financial strain faced by students, particularly those balancing study with part-time work or unpaid placements. It also supports greater access to education by making travel more affordable and sustainable.

AUSA says this victory is just the beginning, reaffirming its commitment to continue advocating for students on issues that impact everyday life. “Here’s to more wins, more advocacy, and a more affordable future for all students,” the association said in a statement.

Students are encouraged to check AT’s official channels for details on how to access the updated discount.
