What is a Class Representative?

A Class Representative (Class Rep) is a student elected by their classmates to act as a link between students and university staff. Their main role is to represent the views, concerns, and feedback of their class to the department and ensure that student voices are heard in decisions that affect their learning experience.

Role of a Class Rep

The key responsibilities of a Class Rep include:

  • Facilitating communication between students and academic staff.
  • Listening to feedback from classmates about teaching, learning, and course-related matters.
  • Raising issues or suggestions at Staff–Student Consultative Committee (SSCC) meetings.
  • Working collaboratively with staff to find solutions and improve the course experience.
  • Reporting back to classmates on the outcomes of discussions and any actions taken.

Class Reps play a vital part in strengthening the relationship between students and staff, helping to ensure that every student has a voice in shaping their education.

Student Representation at the University

Student representation exists at all levels across the University. Most of this is coordinated by the AUSA Education Vice Presidents (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) and the Student Voice Office.

Together, they:

  • Ensure students are represented at every possible level
  • Oversee the election of student representatives
  • Organise training and ongoing support for all reps

Department Level

Each department has Class Representatives or Year Representatives who:

  1. Advocate for students — helping to resolve issues that affect their class or year.
  2. Participate in Staff-Student Consultative Committees (SSCCs) — meetings (held at least twice a semester) where student reps and staff discuss departmental matters.

After these meetings, reps share updates and feedback with the students they represent.

Faculty Level

Each faculty also has an SSCC.

  • Every departmental SSCC elects one student rep to sit on the Faculty SSCC.
  • Faculty reps raise issues discussed at the departmental level and report outcomes back to their departments.
