Fuel Prices: What Does It Mean for Students?

As fuel costs continue to climb, students are being left behind by Government relief packages. AUSA is calling for change — and wants to hear how rising transport costs are affecting you.

Due to global supply chain constraints, fuel prices in New Zealand and around the world have been steadily increasing — but student budgets are staying the same. This has led to the cost of travelling to university, work, or other commitments becoming much more expensive.

The Government has announced targeted support for low-to-middle income families. Students, however, have been left off this support package. AUSA has sent an open letter calling on the Government to extend this support to students as well.

While students now have access to more affordable public transport won by student associations, many students still rely on driving to get to campus, work, or other commitments. We have already heard from students on practicum or on placement who are significantly affected by the rising cost of transport.
